Introduction:
In preparation for the spring and summer months, QVAC carried out planned preventative maintenance (PPM) checks on the air conditioning systems at a client’s site in Milton Keynes. During this routine service, our engineers identified low running pressures on several units—an early sign of a refrigerant leak. This case study outlines the steps taken to diagnose and resolve the issue, ensuring both system efficiency and environmental compliance in line with F-Gas regulations.

Background:
Fluorinated gases (F-Gases) are widely used in refrigeration, air conditioning, and heat pump systems. Detecting and repairing leaks in these systems is essential to maintain performance, reduce energy consumption, and minimise environmental impact—especially since F-Gases are potent greenhouse gases.

Procedure:
As part of the PPM checks, our team conducted nitrogen pressure testing and bubble tests to locate the source of the leak. The investigation revealed faulty Schrader valves, which were allowing refrigerant to escape from the system. These valves were replaced, the system was regassed to the correct pressures, and then fully recommissioned.

This proactive maintenance intervention came just in time—catching the fault early prevented a significant quantity of F-Gas from being released into the atmosphere.

Outcome:
The early detection and timely repair of the leaking components ensured the client’s AC systems were ready for the demands of warmer weather, operating at peak efficiency. This not only safeguarded system reliability but also supported environmental responsibility by preventing unnecessary refrigerant loss.

Conclusion:
This case study demonstrates QVAC’s commitment to preventative maintenance, technical excellence, and environmental stewardship. By identifying faults before they escalate, we help our clients maintain compliant, efficient, and sustainable HVAC systems throughout the year.
